Anger over parking proposal Meeting draws support from politicians By Julia Evans BUSINESSES IN Fendalton fear for their future after being presented with a city council plan that would reduce parking outside their shops. Elizabeth Fry, owner of The
Cook Shop, organised a petition of 336 signatures, which prompted an on-site meeting between Ilam MP Gerry Brownlee, city councillor Jamie Gough and Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood Community Board chairman David Cartwright. The concern for Mrs Fry and the other shops on the corner of Holmwood Rd and Rossall St, including Le Panier, Holmwood Dairy, Flowers on Holmwood and The Preservatory Café and
Delicatessen, is that they would lose their walk-in customer base. “It’ll kill us . . . the reality is it’s putting all these businesses in real danger of having to close their doors,” Mrs Fry said. She said she regularly hears from customers that the only reason they stopped was because there was a park free. Gilles Thébault, owner of the adjacent shop Le Panier, said he would have to shut up because it would create another “dead
corner” in the city. The proposal includes a pedestrian island and curb expansion on Rossall St and no stopping restrictions around the corner on to Holmwood Rd. The purpose is to address speeding drivers and pedestrian safety. Mr Brownlee said he, Cr Gough and Mr Cartwright were “all on the same page.” After the meeting, Cr Gough said he was confident that “common sense” would prevail.
Mr Cartwright said it was good to get on the ground and see for themselves how it would affect the shops and help come up with a remedy. But he said they needed to be sensible and realistic. “It’s a busy corner, but it’s not broken so we don’t need to fix it. There are examples in the city that are much worse,” he said. Mr Cartwright and Cr Gough will take the businesses concerns back to the community board.

THERE’S AN amazing sports story on page 20 today. Cotswold Primary School pupil Matthew Growcott has become the top squash player for his age group in Oceania. Seeded fifth, he beat the more fancied contenders including the top seed 3-0 at the championships in Auckland and if he continues to progress he’ll be one of our top squash players of the future. You have to sympathise with business owners when Big Brother decides to cut car parking outside their premises. That’s the situation currently facing business on the corner of Holmwood Rd and Rossall St, Fendalton (see page 1). The businesses have got a 336-signature petition and brought in heavyweights Gerry Brownlee and senior city councillor Jamie Gough to try and stop the plan to restrict off-street car parking. – Barry Clarke

Bid to trespass lake vandals By Julia Evans THE CITY council is looking into ways of preventing vandalism at a Harewood reserve. City council staff and the Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood Community Board want to trespass the vandals, who have been using angle grinders, winches and bolt cutters to gain entry to the area around Lake Roto Kohatu. David After costing Cartwright ratepayers more than $15,000 over three months, the community board does not want to spend more money cleaning up around the lake. Chairman David Cartwright said after receiving a memo from city council staff, the community board is now working on preventative measures, considering the serious nature and cost of the vandalism. “Are park rangers trained or skilled enough to deal with this? of the public know who the offending vandals were so they should be trespassed at least. “If these people are vandalising, we need to trespass (them) and . . . we do know who they are,” he said. Ms Holder confirmed that at least $15,000 had been spent in the summer season. She said that included the repair and replacement of damaged facilities as a result of people driving vehicles on

In Brief BOOKARAMA SUCCESS Sales from the Rotary Club of Bishopdale Burnside’s Bookarama made 16 per cent more than the previous year, but the club would not disclose the exact figure, member Lindsay Crossen said. He said the event’s success was a result of donations of good quality books from people in the north-west. Over the next 12 months, the money will be used to support the community. NEW YOUTH MANAGER A new manager has been appointed to 24-7 YouthWork, based at Burnside High School. The organisation aims to connect young people with mentors and role models. Josh Olds has taken over from previous manager Paul Holmes. A luncheon was held recently to farewell Mr Holmes. GREEN OPEN HOMES Homes at 94 Hills Rd, St Albans, and 28a Holmwood Rd, Merivale, will be open to the public from 11am-4pm every weekend in May. These two homes are part of a project aimed at giving people an idea of what it would be like to live in one of the city’s greenest houses.

OUR VISIT TO UC DAVIS, CALIFORNIA Steve, Isaac and myself recently spent time at UC Davis, the #1 Veterinary school in the world. For 2 years running it has received this huge accolade and when you are there you can see why. It operates and is the size of a mini CHCH Public hospital. They are a teaching hospital as well as seeing referral patients and first opinion clients. Their specialities include 24/7 emergency and critical care, cardiology, neurology, ophthalmology, oncology and surgery. They were originally set up to see 5500 patients per year, last year they saw 50,000 patients. Everyone was so friendly and helpful and enthusiastic about being part of this college. It had a wonderful vibe... Isaac was hooked. Approximately 140 students get accepted yearly in to Davis, with around 10% being male. It cost about US$45,000 for tuition( $64000 NZL) and then there is living costs on top of that. Vet students on average come out owing US $135,000. These students have spent the previous 4 years obtaining an excellent undergraduate degree just to get accepted, majoring in science and maths. There are 30 colleges of Veterinary Medicine in the US and each year about 3000 students get accepted. About 40% of students who apply get accepted somewhere. In your 3rd year you start to branch off in your area of interest – either companion animal, equine, mixed practice or production animals. After their 4 year degree at Davis, most will apply for 1-2 year internship at another Veterinary College to further their skills in an area they are interested in. Davis don’t offer internships. Our freshman (first year) guide loves dentistry so her plans are to become a specialist in this field. After her internship, she then needs to apply for a residency at one of the 30 colleges, which could be anything from 3-5 years more study!! These are hard to come by, and you have to be the best of the bunch, although a Vet degree from UC Davis stands you in good steed. So to be a specialist in your field in the US takes between 13-15 years, and the debt these students accrue is massive, a few get scholarships, but most have to pay. I met a vet in her 40’s who still has a student loan. Steve spent 2 days tagging along with ophthalmology specialists, residents and students on rotation. First and second year students get at least 2 weeks of ophthalmology per year ( 27 years ago when I studied at Massey, 1 day was dedicated to “eyes”). He really enjoyed the collegial discussions on cases, sussing out all the latest equipment, chatting to the students and doing rounds with them. Steve came away pleased with his skills

Ngaio Marsh village retirees part of record fitness attempt and expertise in ophthalmology, although a few pieces of equipment caught his eye. Isaac and I thoroughly enjoyed our 3 hour tour of the entire faculty. Isaac loved the exotics hospital where they house and treat the reptiles, birds, rabbits, turtles etc. We also visited their raptor centre, home to rescued birds of prey that can no longer see or fly. He also enjoyed watching elbow arthroscopy on a Golden Retriever from a viewing room. He could see them cutting and sucking out torn cartilage from the video screen. What amazed me was the amount of people in theatre – 9 in all, including the chief surgeon, 2 residents, 3 anesthetists and 4th year students. There were so many people milling around keenly observing. They do MRI and CT here and even have a massive MRI machine that can fit a horse into. The most expensive patient to date was a spoodle who underwent dialysis for 18 months, visiting the hospital twice weekly to have all the toxins removed from her blood. Her final account was US$140,000! The most expensive piece of equipment is a linear accelerator used for radiation treatment for cancer patients costing a little over 1 million. Apparently one of the only surgical procedures NOT performed here at Davis is renal transplants as when attempted on cats over 10 years ago, the survival rate was poor. A handful of colleges perform renal transplants in cats including the Pennsylvania and Georgia College of Vet medicine. We thoroughly enjoyed our time spent at Davis and I thought how amazing, fun and expensive it would be to be a student now studying vet medicine at UC Davis. The students we met were just so absorbed, very happy and grateful to be at this world class faculty. I came out thinking I am so in the right profession. -Dr Michele McMaster
AN AUSTRALASIAN record has been set by more than 3000 retirees who took part in a synchronised fitness class hosted by a retirement village in Papanui. Across Australia and New Zealand, 31 Ryman Healthcare retirement villages were linked via YouTube to set a record for Australasia’s biggest synchronised fitness class involving elderly people. Ngaio Marsh Retirement Village hosted the record attempt, with fitness guru Nicki Brown leading the session. Black Fern Kendra Cocksedge and Ry-
man managing director Simon Challies were at the Papanui event. Mr Challies said the aim was to preserve residents’ independence, reduce the risks of falls and get them to try new things. However, he had no idea the classes would be so popular. “It was a bit off the wall, introducing circuit classes with swiss balls, weights and bands, to a group of people it was a bit foreign to. It was like Les Mills meets Ryman,” he said

View from above the traffic A SERIES of photos show views of the Russley Rd and Memorial Ave intersection. The New Zealand Transport Agency took the photos from the top of a 27m gateway arch on State Highway 1. The structure will be made up of 30 different sections and weigh 400 tonne. The arches are set to be completed halfway through this year as part of the $112 million SH1 upgrade project. The arches will cost about $4
million. They have attracted criticism due to the cost, which is being funded through the National Land Transport Fund. The money comes from petrol tax, road-user charges and vehicle registration fees. The arches, designed by Warren and Mahoney, are said to symbolise the crossing of paths, namely the Southern Alps and the braided rivers of the Canterbury Plains, and the excitement of travel.

SING: L’Attitude Quartet, made up of Carolyn Duggan, Toni Griffin, Virginia Humphrey-Taylor and Patrice Driver, won the Sweet Adelines New Zealand Quartet Competition in Dunedin recently.
A cappella group Home & Leisure Show playhouse will head to Vegas competition and charity auction AFTER WINNING the national championships, a cappella group L’Attitude Quartet is bound for Las Vegas. The group finished first at the Sweet Adelines New Zealand Quartet Competition in Dunedin recently. It is made up of members from throughout the country, including two from Christchurch. Carolyn Duggan, L’Attitude Quartet’s tenor, and Virginia Humphrey-Taylor, who sings the bass, both belong to the Christchurch City Chorus.
The group’s other members are Patrice Driver, baritone, of the Nelson Bays Harmony Chorus, and Toni Griffin, lead singer, from the Bella A Cappella Chrous in Keri Keri. While getting together is a challenge, the women have achieved success through a passion for singing, dedication to independent vocal work and monthly weekend rehearsals. L’Attitude Quartet will represent New Zealand at the International Sweet Adeline Quartet Competition in Las Vegas in October.
THE STAR Home & Leisure Show will feature a novel fundraising idea this year. Three teams will vie to build the most impressive and creative children’s playhouse, which will then be auctioned at the show on July 1. All funds raised at the auction will go to support local charities Birthright Canterbury and Tenants Protection Association Christchurch. Dealing with loss and grief Canterbury University student Heather McMillan talks about her experiences dealing with grief at a young age When I was 16 my Mum passed away from cancer – this is a sentence that I still get anxious saying or typing even four years later. It’s the point in a conversation that will cut all upbeat to the ground. I generally just tell people and then reassure them that not knowing what to say is normal. From the age of 16 I’ve had to teach myself how to cope with
dealing with grief. With the sadness of it, the spontaneity of it and the knowing it’s something I have to face every day. Dealing with grief at any age is horrible, but as a teenager and young person it has been especially hard. Thankfully, though, along the way I’ve gained the help from CanTeen through their offspring group and youth workers.

Keep cooking under control in the kitchen
I have been given so many opportunities to meet other youth who are affected by cancer. To most people CanTeen is seen as a resource to patients but it is so much more then that and I am so lucky to have them. They have been the introducer of so many other young people who are going through the same or similar situations with cancer. Having the release of having people who can relate to what you are going through as a young person is more then incredible. It can make the most overwhelming of days feel better by having people who actually understand what you are going through. CanTeen has become such a big part of my life that I am shaving my head to raise funds and give back to the Canterbury branch. My main purpose for this head shave is to raise awareness about what CanTeen do and to be able to open up about my own experiences dealing with grief.
Mark Thomas, fire risk management officer I KNOW I’ve repeated the advice about looking when cooking dozens of times over the years and it looks very much like it’s never going to cease completely. But every now and then I despair a bit. Like on Wednesday when within three-and-a-half-hours fire trucks responded to three different cooking incidents. A house completely filled with smoke from a forgotten pie in the microwave in Sockburn was followed by a pot on the stove, again filling the house in Kotare St and a further incident in Bryndwr where smoke inhalation was the result for the elderly occupants. Any of these could have been much worse. A life or a house gone. But all of them were preventable. Stay in the kitchen. The smell of burning in your home can be frightening for anyone. More so if you’re blind.

The occupant of a house in Addington thankfully did the exact right thing, again on Wednesday, by phoning 111 and having the local crew there within minutes. Turned out to be a tea towel smouldering on an element. The potential here was a bit frightening. I’ve not mentioned arson here for a long time. It’s still occurring but the removal of most of the empty houses in the red zone has made it less visible or newsworthy. A drum of diesel spread along the road in the early hours last Sunday in Wigram was lit and left by whatever morons thought it was clever. They’re still out there. As stupid and dangerous as ever.

The schools belong to the Queen Margaret network and the exchange has taken place for several years. While in Chile for a month, Virginia and Aisha will visit Valparaiso, Santiago, and other well-known cultural areas famous for art or pottery. They will also attend a

By Gordon Findlater FORMER ST Andrew’s College triathlete Ari Graham will test herself against the world’s best after being named in the New Zealand team to compete at the ITU world championships in the Netherlands. Graham, 18, is the only Canterbury athlete in the team of six juniors (under-19) who will compete in September. The Southshore resident will be joined by Hannah Knighton, Waikato/Tauranga, Ainsley Thorpe, Trent Dodds, Dan Hoy, Auckland, and Janus Staufenberg, Wanaka. Mark Elliott, Triathlon New Zealand’s high performance director, is excited by the talent being demonstrated in this team. “The selected athletes span across the country from the top of Auckland to the deep south in Wanaka,” said Elliott. “It’s exciting to see the depth of the athletes coming from different parts of the country, as well as the coaches who are guiding our current and future champions.” Over the summer, Graham competed in the national junior series, which is contested between the top under-19-year-olds in the country over five events. Graham not only won the series, she took out all five events. She is also a former age group middle distance and cross country champion. After competing in a couple of school triathlons, she made the decision late last year to dedicate her time to triathlon. She is currently training fulltime after finishing school.

By Gordon Findlater DEFENDING champions Christchurch Boys’ High School have gone to the top of the UC Championship following their 44-8 bonus point win over Burnside High School. After two rounds of competition, CBHS is one of only three teams with two wins since Timaru Boys’ High School and Nelson College also recorded victories. CBHS and Timaru will meet next Tuesday in what could give an early gauge of who the competition favourites will be. “They had a good young side last year and they’ve had a great start to this season, so I think it’s going to be a really competitive match,” said CBHS assistant coach Rob Smith. Meanwhile, St Bede’s College bounced back after their opening round shock loss to Lincoln Combined, accounting for Marl-
borough Boys’ College 38-14. After an opening round bye, St Andrew’s College got their campaign off to the perfect start with a 52-19 bonus point win over Roncalli Combined. St Andrew’s face a tough task next weekend when they make the journey north to take on Marlborough BC. “Especially at home they’re always going to be tough. They have it tough most weeks having to travel south,” said St Andrew’s assistant coach Mike Johnston. By Gordon Findlater MEDBURY School pupil Jacob Douglas will take on the world’s best in October when he takes the next step towards his dream of driving in formula one. Jacob, 11, started racing three years ago and has now secured his spot at the International Rok Cup finals in Italy by dominating at the KartSport NZ national sprint championships in Invercargill. He won the vortex mini rok class, taking out his heat races before going on to win the final by more than four seconds. “The competition was pretty stiff down there with a lot of good drivers,” said Jacob. He previously raced motorbikes but after spending a day at the track with his father in 2014, decided it was time to sell the bike after finding his passion for driving on four wheels. Trained by Matthew Hamilton of WKS Kartstore and Tiffany Chittenden, Jacob is a boy who wants to go places. He lives and breathes motor racing and is passionate about making his mark on the world stage.

they’re quite supportive of my racing,” said Jacob. In Italy, he will drive for the OTK Kart Group. The group’s former drivers include seven-time formula one world champion Michael Schumacher. The International Rok Cup finals take place from October 11-14.

game, the Wairakei team never gave up. They played five games over the twoday competition and showed wonderful skill development and perseverance, a school spokesman said
“Even though they did not win any games, they definitely played to the best of their ability, and fought hard until the last whistle blew,” he said. “They showed great improvement over the weekend.”

Directions
Ingredients ¼ cup Caster sugar 2 Lemons, to give three tsp finely grated zest ¼ cup Unsalted butter, softened ⅔ cup Hazelnut, blanched and chopped ⅓ cup Dark chocolate, chopped 6 Pears 1½ cups Marsala or Ginger Wine 1 to serve Whipped cream, or lightly sweetened creme fraiche Directions Preheat oven to 185 deg C. In a bowl, mix three tablespoons sugar, two teaspoons grated lemon zest, the soft unsalted butter, chopped blanched hazelnuts and chopped dark chocolate. Peel pears, slice in half and scoop out the seeds to make a well. Trim the base of each, enabling them to sit flat in a greased baking dish. Sprinkle each half pear with Marsala or Ginger Wine. Spoon the filling into the centre of each
pear, and sprinkle well with the remaining Marsala and castor sugar. Bake for 45-50 minutes or until done. The pears are cooked when a skewer can be easily inserted into the thickest part. Sprinkle the last tsp of lemon zest over the warm pears, and serve with semi-whipped cream or crème fraîche. PARSNIP AND APPLE SOUP WITH PARSNIP RIBBONS

Ingredients 1 Tbsp Butter 1 Onion, large, finely chopped 800g Parsnips, peeled and chopped 2 Apples, large, cored and chopped 1½ Ltr Chicken stock, or vegetable 4 Tbsp Cream 1 Parsnip, extra 1 to taste Salt & freshly ground pepper

Melt the butter in a large saucepan. Add the onion and cook over a very low heat for about 20 minutes until it’s soft and barely coloured. Add the parsnip and apple, then cook for five minutes, stirring frequently. Add the stock and simmer gently for about 45 minutes. Allow to cool a little, then purée using a stick blender or food processor. Reheat to serve, adding the cream and salt and pepper to taste. To make the parsnip chips, peel the parsnip, then use the peeler to make long, thin strips. Heat about 3cm of vegetable oil in a pan, then add the parsnip strips in batches, frying until golden. Drain on paper towels, then use as a garnish. WATERCRESS AND BROCCOLI WITH FETA AND ROAST GARLIC Ingredients 50g Butter
1 Onion 1 Carrot 1 Potato 2 Bay leaves 500g Broccoli, chopped 1 Ltr Vegetable stock, or chicken 2 Garlic 1 bunch Watercress 1 to taste Salt & freshly ground pepper 100g Feta Directions Melt the butter in a large pot. Add the diced onion, carrot, potato and bay leaves. Stir for two to three minutes to soften. Add the broccoli and the stock then simmer just until the broccoli is tender. Cotswold’s squash sensation COTSWOLD PRIMARY School pupil Matthew Growcott has continued his winning ways, taking gold in the under-11 section of the Oceania Squash Championships recently. The tournament was held at the Henderson Squash Club, Auckland, and attracted more than 200 entries across the age groups, with players from Australia, China, French Polynesia, Hong Kong, New Caledonia and Singapore making it a truly international event. Matthew, who was seeded fifth in the tournament, had to play his first match in the main draw against top seed, Oliver Dunbar, of Wellington, who he beat 3-0. His next match was against fourth seed Australian, Aryan Madan, where his fitness showed over the Australian, winning 3-1. In the final, he played sixth seed Reece Holmes, of Hawera, where he was more focused and consistent than his opponent, winning the title 3-0. An exciting prospect for the young Cantabrian is that he is still eligible for next year’s under-11 Oceania Squash Championships in Australia. It is the second squash tournament he has won this year, after winning the Squashways junior grade in March. He is coached by John Brown weekly on a one-on-one basis and is also part of Brown’s high-

“From the very first moment I started learning the Ekman repertoire, I fell in love with it! It’s like nothing I’ve ever danced before in my 15 year career. What I love most about the Ekman style is the rhythms we get to make, with both our bodies and our voices. All three works are to such ‘feel good’ music and have a quirky sense of humour, so you can’t help but enjoy yourself while you’re dancing. Performing in my hometown always brings a bag of mixed emotions. On the one hand I get extremely excited to be performing in the stunningly beautiful Isaac Theatre Royal, which feels so normal, so right, and is almost comforting to me. But on the other hand I know the majority of the dance world in Christchurch, which makes me nervous, because I want to perform perfectly for them and make them proud. When you know that certain people are in the audience, it brings a nervous tension to your dancing – which can often make for a better show! I can’t wait to be back in Christchurch with the Royal New Zealand Ballet’s Three By Ekman. Make sure you book your tickets for a night of fist pumping, high energy fun!”
